Curriculum: Shell Scripting

This curriculum structures a shell scripting workshop from fundamentals to advanced operations and security review. It combines language basics, practical scripting, tests, CI/CD and safe operational decisions.

Curriculum Goal

After the full series you can read, design, test, review and harden Bash scripts. You know the limits of shell scripts and can decide when Python, Go or a specialized tool is a better fit.

01 / 09

Teaching Model

The workshop follows a repeating cycle:

text
Understand -> Write -> Test -> Debug -> Harden -> Document
Step Goal Typical Activity
Concept understand semantics and limits quoting rule, exit-code model, process model
Implementation write a small script with a clear interface shebang, usage, getopts, functions
Check run syntax, linting and tests bash -n, ShellCheck, smoke test
Error path reproduce a known fault missing file, invalid option, signal
Hardening reduce risk allowlist, mktemp, trap, absolute paths
Documentation record operations and recovery README, runbook, exit-code table
02 / 09

Level Structure

Level Focus Outcome
Fundamentals Syntax, Ausführung, Quoting, Exit Codes, Dateien und erste sichere Skripte You can explain, run and review the included script patterns.
Intermediate CLI-Design, Funktionen, getopts, Textverarbeitung, Fehlerbehandlung und Cleanup You can explain, run and review the included script patterns.
Professional Skriptarchitektur, Tests, CI/CD, Packaging, Observability und teamfähige Standards You can explain, run and review the included script patterns.
Advanced Security Threat Modeling, Injection-Schutz, Secrets, Rechte, sichere Löschung und Incident Response You can explain, run and review the included script patterns.
03 / 09

Roles and Learning Paths

  • Developers focus on CLI behavior, tests, CI and maintainability.
  • Administrators focus on filesystems, processes, cron, systemd and recovery.
  • DevOps and SRE roles focus on idempotence, observability, runners and safe automation.
  • Security engineers focus on injection, secrets, permissions, PATH and auditability.
04 / 09

Lab Strategy

All labs run locally without production credentials. Each example creates a work/ directory, writes evidence files and can be repeated. Destructive operations are simulated or guarded by dry-run behavior.

05 / 09

Assessment Rubric

Criterion Basic Good Excellent
Correctness script runs on the happy path error paths are handled behavior is tested and documented
Security no obvious secrets input is validated destructive paths have multiple safeguards
Maintainability readable structure clear functions and usage CI gates and runbook exist
Operations manual execution works logs and exit codes are useful recovery has been practiced
