Docker Workshop – Overview

Overview

This workshop covers the path from fundamentals to advanced operations and security hardening. Its structure follows the Kubernetes workshop: reference documents, four workshop levels, exercises, assessments, solutions, official sources and 31 practical examples.

The focus is realistic Docker practice:

  • understand Docker Engine, CLI, daemon and API
  • reason about images, layers, tags, digests and registries
  • write reproducible and maintainable Dockerfiles
  • handle container lifecycle, networks, ports, volumes and logs
  • review and operate Compose projects in a structured way
  • use Docker in CI/CD, registry and platform contexts
  • assess rootless mode, socket protection, user namespaces, capabilities, seccomp and AppArmor
  • troubleshoot systematically and clean up labs reliably

Quickstart

bash
# Workshop content is provided through the Orthevs Academy.
chmod +x scripts/provision_docker.sh
./scripts/provision_docker.sh --dry-run

On a prepared Linux lab host, verify the environment:

bash
docker version
docker context ls
docker info
docker run --rm alpine:3.20 echo docker-workshop-ok

Examples

The examples are listed in examples/README.md. Every example contains a main description, a German detail page, an English detail page, validatable artifacts and a run.sh that checks local files. The examples deliberately do not build images or start long-running containers without an explicit learner decision.

Working Mode

  1. Read the matching document in docs/.
  2. Work through the workshop level in workshops/.
  3. Use the examples as controlled lab artifacts.
  4. Complete the exercises and document commands, observations and cleanup.
  5. Check yourself with the assessments and solutions.

Security Rule

The Docker daemon is powerful. Write access to the Docker socket often means effective host control. Do not use real secrets in this workshop, do not share production registry tokens and do not mount sensitive host paths into lab containers.

Official Sources and Scope

The material is aligned with public Docker documentation. When the workshop mentions external tools around Docker Engine, those tools are presented as adjacent operational practice, not as Docker Engine features.

31 modules as one continuous learning path.

The sequence remains unchanged: from the lab skeleton through technical foundations and operating models to final troubleshooting. The technical directory names are deliberately preserved.
