Diagrams: Docker

This document is part of the Docker workshop and describes diagrams as training material, reference documentation and review basis.

Target State

You should not treat Docker as a loose command collection. The important model is the boundary: Docker CLI talks to Docker Engine, Docker Engine manages images, containers, networks and volumes, and daemon access is security-sensitive. The document connects concept, workflow, evidence and cleanup.

Core Terms

Term Meaning
Docker Engine Client-server platform made of CLI, REST API and daemon for images, containers, networks and volumes.
Docker CLI Tool for build, run, inspect, logs, Compose calls and context switching.
Docker Daemon Background service that creates, starts, observes and manages containers and resources.
Image Read-only layered template for containers including filesystem and metadata.
Container Running or stopped image instance with isolated process space and configurable resources.
Dockerfile Text file with build instructions such as FROM, RUN, COPY, USER, ENTRYPOINT and HEALTHCHECK.
Build Context Directory tree sent to the builder; unnecessary files are excluded through .dockerignore.
Layer Reusable filesystem change that affects build cache, image size and supply chain.
Tag and Digest A tag is a movable name; a digest identifies image content cryptographically and immutably.
Registry Service for storing, distributing and authenticating images, such as Docker Hub or a private registry.
Network Docker network for container communication, DNS names, bridge isolation and published ports.
Volume Persistent storage outside the container layer with its own lifecycle.
Bind Mount Direct host path mount into a container, useful in labs and risky with broad write access.
Compose Declarative model for multiple services, networks and volumes in one Compose file.
Rootless Mode Mode where daemon and containers run without root privileges of the host user.
Socket Unix socket or TCP endpoint of the daemon; access to it gives broad host control.
03 / 12

Working Model

  1. Describe the desired state: build an image, start a container, attach a network, provide a volume or define a Compose project.
  2. Check context: docker context ls, docker version, registry access, current directory and build context.
  3. Execute the change and record the exact command.
  4. Prove state with docker inspect, docker ps, docker logs, docker network inspect, docker volume inspect or docker compose ps.
  5. Assess security, persistence and cleanup before closing the exercise.
04 / 12

# Validate a Compose project before leaving anything running
docker compose config
docker compose up --detach
docker compose ps
docker compose down --volumes
05 / 12

Typical Decisions

Decision Useful Question Risk of the Wrong Choice
Base image Is the base trustworthy, small enough and maintained? Large attack surface, slow builds, unpatched packages
Tag or digest Does execution need to be reproducible? Movable tags can resolve to different content
Volume or bind mount Should the host path be part of the design? Host file write access, hard-to-reproduce labs
Bridge or host network Is isolated container communication enough? unnecessary port exposure and conflicts
Rootless or rootful Which host privileges does the workload really need? daemon and container compromise with high impact
Compose or single run Is this one service or a topology? manual state and hard-to-review dependencies
06 / 12

Operations Notes

  • Docker containers are not tiny virtual machines; they share the host kernel.
  • A container stops when its main process exits. This is central for ENTRYPOINT and CMD.
  • Docker stores persistent data reliably outside the container layer only when volumes or intentional bind mounts are used.
  • Compose files should be normalized with docker compose config before teams share them.
  • Access to /var/run/docker.sock is not a harmless convenience; it is broad host-level power.
07 / 12

Scope Boundary

This document covers Docker Engine and direct Docker workflows. Kubernetes, containerd administration, registry-server hardening and external security scanners are mentioned only where they explain Docker decisions or realistic operational boundaries.
