Docker & Compose

Packages applications and runtime dependencies into images and describes multiple services as one operable Compose topology. Networks, volumes, configuration and dependencies thereby become versionable and reproducible.

Docker & Compose as an integrable tool

This technology may become part of a Factory. The Factory defines the domain tool function; scope, version, permissions, target environment and outputs must be evaluated for each integration.

Technical purpose

Docker & Compose

Docker provides the runtime in which an image becomes an isolated process with defined resources, networks and filesystem mounts. Compose extends this model with a declarative application topology: a YAML file arranges services, images or builds, networks, volumes, dependencies and configuration values. The shared lifecycle simplifies setup, startup, status inspection, logs and controlled teardown of related services. Reproducibility still requires images, configurations and external dependencies to be versioned unambiguously.

Integration in Orthevs

Orthevs Ecosystem

Docker- and Compose-based services form the current local operating foundation for Platform Core, Labs and supporting components. Orthevs defines image references, network boundaries, volumes, health checks, resources and configuration through versioned service definitions. Secrets are supplied outside the Compose file and privileges are minimized per service. The higher-level capability and contract model remains separate from the runtime so the same domain handovers can later be implemented on other operating profiles.

Relevant capabilities

Relevant capabilities

  • Versioned service topologies with clearly identified images, builds and dependencies
  • Shared lifecycle for start, stop, rebuild, status, logs and one-off tasks
  • Explicit networks and service names for controlled internal communication
  • Named volumes and bind mounts for deliberately persisted or supplied data
  • Health checks, restart rules and dependencies as part of the service definition
  • Profiles and override files for clearly separated, reviewable operating contexts

Operating boundaries

Operating boundaries

Containers are not an automatic security boundary. Capabilities, kernel, runtime, images, networks and host privileges require a shared hardening model.

A successfully started container is not reliable evidence of health. Application-specific readiness, monitoring and controlled failure handling remain necessary.

Secrets, production data and backups must not enter images, Compose files or ephemeral container filesystems without control.

Compose simplifies operation of a topology but does not replace a complete high-availability, scaling, recovery or cluster operating model.
