Workflow Engine

Orchestrates versioned process and workflow definitions into a traceable execution flow. States, decisions, wait points, results and failure paths remain correlated through a shared execution reference.

Workflow Engine as an execution mechanism

This Engine belongs to the technical target model. A concrete use needs defined inputs, supported versions, security boundaries and traceable outcomes.

Execution mission

Workflow Engine

The Workflow Engine interprets an approved, versioned flow definition and maintains the current state, accepted inputs, transition reasons and results throughout execution. It invokes domain capabilities exclusively through their documented contracts and coordinates longer-running flows that include wait points or human decisions. This keeps an execution traceable across interruptions and allows controlled continuation without the engine assuming the domain logic of the participating Labs or Factories.

Architecture role

Orthevs Ecosystem

A Foundation references the specific workflow version and connects its steps to versioned capability contracts. The Workflow Engine passes identity, approved context and correlation data to Labs and Factories, while Platform Core provides identity, event, audit and state services. Where a flow defines quality or evidence gates, its results are handed to Qualification and Evidence in a controlled manner. Domain responsibility always remains with the invoked capability.

Core functions

Core functions

  • Versioned flow definitions with explicit start, intermediate, end and failure states
  • Controlled transitions based on typed results, conditions and decisions
  • Human approval, time limits and documented wait points for asynchronous flows
  • Retry, compensation and controlled cancellation under defined failure rules
  • Correlation of inputs, results, actors, approvals and audit events
  • Traceable continuation from a persisted and unambiguously referenced state

Control boundaries

Control boundaries

The engine must not bypass Lab boundaries through direct data access or undocumented calls. Every domain step requires an approved capability contract.

Irreversible operations require an explicit approval, compensation or recovery model before execution.

Orchestration does not automatically establish the domain correctness of a result. Defined policy and qualification gates remain authoritative for that purpose.

Retries and resumptions must not create uncontrolled duplicate external effects; the behavior must be defined unambiguously by each capability contract.
