Policy Engine

Evaluates versioned, machine-readable rules against the approved context of a specific request. The result remains linked to identity, inputs, the applied policy bundle and an explainable rationale.

Policy Engine as an execution mechanism

This Engine belongs to the technical target model. A concrete use needs defined inputs, supported versions, security boundaries and traceable outcomes.

Execution mission

Policy Engine

The Policy Engine separates reusable governance rules from individual workflows and implementations. For each request, it evaluates an unambiguously versioned policy bundle against the supplied context and records which rules matched, which information was missing and how the result was justified. This makes decisions reviewable and comparable instead of leaving them as hidden conditions inside applications or automation. The engine provides a technical decision basis but does not replace organizational accountability.

Architecture role

Orthevs Ecosystem

Workflows and Factories query policies only at defined decision points and supply the approved identity, resource, change and environment context required for evaluation. The response identifies the result, policy version and rationale references so the calling flow can record and handle it correctly. Approvals, exceptions and risk acceptances remain separate organizational decisions and are not granted solely by a technical allow result.

Core functions

Core functions

  • Policy as Code with unambiguously versioned and referenceable rule bundles
  • Validation of supplied context against defined input and identity requirements
  • Contextual allow, deny and warning decisions at documented gates
  • Explicit handling of policy priorities, overlaps and conflicting results
  • Explainable results with matched rules, rationale and audit reference
  • Comparison and impact analysis of new policy versions before controlled rollout

Control boundaries

Control boundaries

Incomplete, stale or unapproved context cannot produce a reliable decision. Missing required information must remain visible.

Policies require named ownership, tests, review, versioning and controlled rollout. A policy change is itself a change subject to review.

A decision applies only to the stated context, scope and policy version. It is not a general compliance or approval assurance.

The engine must not obtain required information covertly across system boundaries; callers must supply only authorized and traceable context.
